Why am I promoting apps in my classroom? Apps provide an opportunity to complete common tasks in a whole new way and also give us the chance to try create something completely original. Many schools around the country use apps in amazing ways, and I would like to play a role in having them play a larger role in the lives of our students. Personally, I have found some apps to be incredibly helpful for various tasks. My classes use Edmodo and Twitter to communicate with classmates and teachers. Dropbox is a great cloud based program which makes it easy to access your files from any internet connected device. Google Drive has some similar features to Dropbox, but also gives students the ability to create, edit, and store documents in the cloud. Quizlet is great for developing study aids such as flashcards which can be stored on personal mobile devices. We have used Socrative to engage in real-time assessment and allow all students to participate. The final app currently posted is for Evernote. This is a program which is growing in popularity and can be a great tool for organizing notes and research information. When I asked my students how many have heard of Evernote, very few responded with a yes and nobody said they use it. Here is where I hope my "Wall of Apps" will find purpose.
There are numerous apps and programs out there that have enormous benefit in the educational world. Many of these programs can also be beneficial outside of schools too. There are thousands of apps out there and most people have found a few dozen or so which they find useful. Many people discover apps through the suggestions of family, friends, and coworkers. If you know of a good app or cloud based program which would be useful to students and/or teachers, please leave a comment below. I love trying new apps and programs and look forward to your suggestions. Thank you for your help in advance.
