From my sessions at #EdCampTC I now understand the basic concept of a Maker Space. By the most basic definition, a Maker Space is a place/room where people (in my case students) can make stuff. Pretty simple concept, but very powerful idea. Aside from the art room and wood shop, where else can students go in a school to make something.
At #EdCampTC I learned about the Mahtomedi Fab Lab. It prides itself on the idea that you can build almost anything. While reading through their charter, I was almost impressed with the idea that students have to learn how to build things on their own. Of course there is assistance, but the idea of empowering students to learn the process of building something from concept to creation is incredible. The session continued with a ton of great ideas to spark kids interests in creation and creativity. As a very new player to the scene of electronics and programming, I was drawn to the simplicity of theMaKey MaKey. I can only imagine what kids would create with a such a simple, yet powerful tool. What gets me even more excited is where the students would want to go from there.
