As I started to think about what we could do during our time with the coding station, I thought about how I could find a way to integrate coding with something they are already learning in class. Math immediately game to mind, so I started looking for an idea to combine their current math lessons with coding. After a quick search on YouTube, I found this instructional video:
Since I don't regularly teach in an elementary classroom, my estimates of how long activities will take is not always accurate. We started the lesson by having the students create a math problem that would be used for their game. The class was currently working on subtraction with regrouping, so that is the focus that we used. The students had to create a subtraction problem and then identify the right answer and also make up two wrong answers. The goal is to code a game that other students would be able to play. If they tapped on the right answer, they would be praised and move on to the next problem. If they tapped on the wrong answer, they would be given encouragement to try again.
We just started to get to the point where they had a working game when time expired for the day. Therefore, this blog post is going to end here and I look forward to showing you some of the finished products in my next blog post.
